Rye

27 August 2015

Just along the road from Hastings, to the east, is the former cinque port of Rye. I was really looking forward to seeing the old harbour, but was greatly disappointed, nothing left, just a man made short canal leading to the Channel. The town is a bit better but has its problems too. They allow traffic to ply the very narrow streets, with equally narrow pavements on which the people attempt to walk without falling into the paths of vehicles moving too swiftly. It did not help that we visited Rye on a market day, so the town was overly dressed in people! The market itself was like any other market in any town in the UK, a lot of the stall holders were not even English. The buildings are nice to look at and you can smell the history but the council should block some streets off from traffic, its quite dangerous. Here are my images of the day.

A train 'guard' told me that this is the 'line that time forgot'. The train to Brighton, has to wait for the train
from Hastings & Brighton to pass before it can proceed, as the line is single track from Rye to Hastings.

I bet you cant tell which bit was 'photoshopped'

Mermaid Street

A former MTL (Motor Torpedo Launch)

Found in the Channel, an anchor dating from about 1530 and was used on board ships such as the Mary Rose

Medieval Lavatory????

I include this image off the shore at Rye of a rubbish 'scow' taking tons of Londoners rubbish to the sea to be dumped! I thought this was illegal now?
